Depression Therapy
Going beyond the surface to help lift the weight of depression
Feeling low, flat, or numb can be an incredibly isolating experience. You might find it hard to feel joy, to connect with others, or to find motivation—even for things you used to care about. You might be full of self-doubt, stuck in self-criticism, or overwhelmed by guilt, shame, or hopelessness.
Depression can take many forms. For some, it’s a constant presence. For others, it comes in waves. However it shows up, it often reflects something deeper inside that needs attention.
A different approach to depression
Many treatments for depression focus on changing thoughts or managing symptoms. These can be helpful, but they don’t always get to the root of the problem. Often, depression is a signal—pointing to unresolved emotional conflicts, unprocessed loss, or long-standing patterns of self-protection that may no longer be serving you.
This is where ISTDP (Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) can help. It’s a focused, emotionally-attuned therapy designed to uncover and work through the unconscious dynamics that contribute to depression.
How ISTDP can help
From an ISTDP perspective, depression can sometimes develop when strong emotions (like anger, grief, or fear) are blocked or turned inward. This might happen because of early life experiences, unresolved losses, or repeated patterns in relationships where emotions felt unsafe or unacceptable.
ISTDP helps by:
-
Identifying unconscious emotional conflicts that may be fueling symptoms
-
Supporting you to face and feel complex emotions safely, rather than avoiding or suppressing them
-
Breaking patterns of self-criticism, emotional shutdown, or internal tension
-
Reconnecting you with vitality, clarity, and a greater sense of agency
This work can be active and focused, but always at your pace. The goal isn’t just symptom relief — it’s to help you understand and shift what’s happening at the root, so you can experience more lasting emotional freedom.
