Supervision
I offer clinical supervision and case consultation for therapists who want to think carefully about their clinical work and develop greater clarity about what is happening within their sessions.
My approach to supervision is active and collaborative. We look closely at the therapeutic process: what the client is experiencing, how they are responding to you, what may be getting in the way of change, and where intervention may be most helpful.
Alongside understanding the client, we also pay attention to your experience as the therapist. Our own responses, uncertainties and emotional reactions can provide valuable information about what is happening within the therapeutic relationship.
My aim is for supervision to help you develop your clinical understanding while also leaving you with a clearer sense of how to work with what is happening in the room.
Who I Work With
I provide supervision to therapists at different stages of their clinical development, from trainees and newly qualified practitioners through to experienced therapists.
My specialist approach is Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), and I offer supervision to therapists who are learning or practising the model and want to develop their clinical skills.
I also work with therapists from psychodynamic, integrative and other therapeutic backgrounds who are interested in incorporating aspects of ISTDP into their existing practice. This might include developing a greater focus on anxiety, defences, emotional experience and the moment-to-moment therapeutic process.
Supervision can be arranged as regular ongoing work or as one-off or occasional case consultation around a particular client or piece of clinical work.
What We Might Work On
The focus of supervision will depend on you, your client and what is happening within the therapy. This might include:
-
Clarifying where to focus next in a complex case
-
Understanding anxiety and how it is affecting the therapeutic process
-
Recognising and working with defences as they emerge
-
Helping clients develop a greater capacity to experience their feelings
-
Thinking about when and how to intervene more actively
-
Understanding therapeutic impasses or periods where the work feels stuck
-
Working with difficulties or ruptures within the therapeutic relationship
-
Using your own emotional responses to better understand the therapeutic process
-
Integrating ISTDP principles into your existing way of working
How I Work
Supervision can involve discussing a case together or looking more closely at specific moments from a session.
Where recordings are available, we can also review video or audio from clinical work. This allows us to slow the process down and look closely at what is happening between therapist and client, including changes in anxiety, feelings, defences and the impact of particular interventions.
My focus is not on finding a single 'correct' intervention, but on helping you understand the clinical process well enough to make informed decisions about how you want to respond.
My Background
I am a BACP accredited psychotherapist and IEDTA certified ISTDP therapist, with over 15 years of clinical experience.
My original training was in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and my later training in ISTDP has shaped the way I understand and work with anxiety, defences, feelings and the therapeutic relationship.
This combination also informs my approach to supervision: retaining the depth and curiosity of psychodynamic thinking while paying close attention to what is happening in the session and how the therapist can work actively with it.
